Mission Statement

SWIP Fellowships aims to empower and prepare the next generation of womxn for careers as leaders in the public and private sectors. The fellowships team arranges summer fellowships with different organizations in the fields of policy, politics, journalism, and law to provide professional experiences for interested members of the Stanford community.

Candidates

SWIP fellows must have a passion for promoting womxn’s representation in the fields of politics, policy, journalism, and law. All are welcome to apply for SWIP fellowships, but priority will be given to those self-identifying as womxn.

Organizations

SWIP Fellowships partners with organizations that are committed to increasing womxn’s participation in the social and public sector. We support both organizations whose work aim to externally increase womxn’s representation in these sectors, or who aim to increase womxn’s representation within their own organizations. We focus on organizations that are committed to jump-starting our fellows careers in the fields of policy, politics, journalism, and law, and have a commitment to support and increase womxn’s representation at all levels of organization.

Funding

SWIP will assist all fellows in securing funding for their fellowships, and provide resources and guidance on housing, transportation, and summer budgeting. Some positions are paid, but there is no guarantee of a paid role.

Host organization description:

The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights (“EBC”) is a nonprofit organization based in Oakland, CA, working to advance racial and economic justice to ensure dignity and opportunity for low-income people and people of color. In our 22-year history, we have worked on issues including jump starting the green jobs movement, promoting civic engagement, violence prevention through youth leadership, and transforming juvenile justice systems in California. We are currently working to end mass incarceration and mass criminalization in the United States through Truth and Reinvestment—moving resources away from failed criminal justice policies and into creating opportunities, also known as “books not bars, jobs not jails, healthcare not handcuffs.”

Intern Position Description: 

Development Internship

The Development Intern will work directly with the EBC development staff for this unique experience. The person who fills this position will contribute to the continued growth and sustainability of EBC as they learn about our fundraising model, resource organizing strategies, and database tools. As the Development Intern you will have an opportunity to build essential skills for success in nonprofit fundraising. You will receive training and professional development support, engage with the Ella Baker Center’s Fundraising Committee, and provide mission-critical support in our fundraising operation. Candidates must be committed to our mission to divest from prisons and punishment and reinvest those resources in healing and empowerment for our communities. 

What you will gain as a Development Intern:

  • You will learn the basics of nonprofit fundraising best practices.

  • You will be trained on Salesforce and how it’s used in the fundraising space.

  • You will learn how to conduct research for various fundraising opportunities.

  • You will participate in a final capstone project to be determined between you and your supervisor.

Development Internship

We are looking for Development Interns who are:

  • Excited to learn the ins and outs of fundraising.

  • Interested in cultivating their writing skills as a tool for fundraising.

  • Interns are expected to make a commitment of at least 12-20 hours per week during the internship period.

The Ella Baker Center is committed to developing the leadership of individuals directly impacted by the criminal justice system, individuals who are underrepresented in the legal/policy field, and other groups that have been marginalized are strongly encouraged to apply to our program.

Office of Kentucky Governor (Andy Beshear)

 

Host organization description:

Three months after Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear was elected in 2019, the first case of COVID-19 was discovered in the state. Since then, he has worked tirelessly to put public safety over politics to save lives and help our state come back stronger. Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Kentucky's economy is booming under Gov. Beshear’s leadership. In 2021 alone, he attracted $11.2 billion in private sector investments that are creating more than 18,000 quality jobs for Kentuckians. In September, he announced the single largest economic development project in state history. Ford and its partner SK Innovation are building the largest electric vehicle battery plants in the country in Hardin County, KY. While fighting COVID-19 and continuing to support our growing economy, interns would also have the opportunity to work on other top priorities for Gov. Beshear's administration: increasing wages; expanding health care; supporting education and retirements; leading in agritech, electric battery production and other industries of the future; and leading by example for all of Team Kentucky.

Intern Position Description: 

Office of Governor Andy Beshear, Commonwealth of Kentucky Government:

The student in this position would work in communications, legal, or legislative affairs (or a combination) depending on their background and interests. Previous interns have worked on press releases, event planning, speechwriting, graphic design, website design and/or photography and videography, bill signings, legislative networking, and legal affairs, to support Gov. Beshear's priorities for helping Kentucky families. Strong writing and communications skills, and/or photography/videography/graphic design background are preferred. The most important objectives are being ready to work hard and being open to feedback and learning on the job. The internship would last 8-10 weeks, and we are flexible on the start date.

IIBA helps immigrants, refugees, and their families join and contribute to the community, by providing high-quality immigration legal services, education, and civic engagement opportunities. IIBA was founded in 1918 and currently has 57 staff members.

Intern Position Descriptions: 

Legal Representative/Attorney Support Fellow: The Legal Representative/Attorney Support Fellow will assist in preparing declarations for U Visa applications. They will conduct phone interviews with Spanish-speaking crime victims and then draft declarations that tell their stories in a way that establishes their eligibility for a U Visa. In addition, they will help our legal representatives with other tasks necessary to preparing immigration applications, such as filling out forms and requesting police reports. If there is time, they will also have the opportunity to work one-on-one with DACA applicants to help them gather evidence and prepare their forms.

Workshop Fellow: The Workshop Fellow will support us in preparing for and running our naturalization and DACA workshops. They will call clients in Spanish to screen them for eligibility, explain to them the documents they need to gather and receive and review documents before the workshop. The day of the workshop, they will assist in facilitating breakout rooms via Zoom and translate between clients who speak only Spanish and pro bono attorneys who speak only English. They will also assist us in preparing DACA applications, outside of the workshops, by working one on one with applicants to guide them in gathering documents and preparing their forms.

Californians United for a Responsible Budget

 

Description: Established in 2003, Californians United for a Responsible Budget (CURB) is a statewide coalition of over 80 grassroots organizations working to: 1) reduce the number of people imprisoned, 2) reduce the number of prisons and jails, and 3) shift state and local spending from corrections and policing to human services, bridging movements for environmental, racial, and economic justice.

Intern Position Descriptions: 

Our internships provide the opportunity to gain experience in research, outreach, grassroots organizing, media campaigns, coalition and movement building, public education, policy advocacy, and social justice work. Working directly with the Statewide Coordinator and Media Coordinator, the interns will have the opportunity to develop leadership and organizing skills while working alongside an amazing group of anti-prison activists.

Advocacy Internship: Assist CURB in our state-level advocacy work to shrink the prison and jail systems in California, reduce incarceration, and invest in community-based solutions. Responsibilities include supporting a small organization with limited resources; engaging member organizations in legislative and state budget advocacy; writing letters of support and opposition for legislation; and coordinating advocacy events.

Media & Communications Internship: Assist CURB in using media and communications to generate broad public support for reducing the number of people in prison and jail in California. Responsibilities include managing social media updates across platforms, including unique content creation, memes, and graphics; supporting grassroots organizing, including all events and outreach efforts; and updating the website as it relates to communications.

Development Internship: Assist curb in development and fundraising efforts to generate broad public support for reducing the number of people in prison and jail in California. Responsibilities include supporting grassroots organizing and outreach efforts; cultivating relationships with potential & current donors; coordinating the logistics of various fundraising activities; and supporting grant writing and research.

Description: End Rape on Campus (EROC) works to end campus sexual violence through direct support for survivors and their communities; prevention through education; and policy reform at the campus, local, state, and federal levels. We envision a world in which each individual has an educational experience free from violence, and until then, that all survivors are believed, trusted, and supported.

Intern Position Description: 

Centering the Margins Fellow: Collaborate in areas of Centering the Margins program planning and coordination; Engage in meeting planning and for the Student Survivor Caucus (SSC) bimonthly meetings; Work alongside the Program Manager in executing developing the plan for year three of the program; Assist in content ideas and creation for EROC’s social media and promotion of CTM programs and perspectives

Campus Accountability Fellow: Conduct research and fact-checking to further the creation and expansion of EROC’s Campus Accountability Map + Tool. Collaborate with Campus Policy Manager to determine the next phase of schools and metrics to research. Outreach to college and community partners to recruit additional research volunteers and spread awareness of the tool. Assist in content ideas and creation for EROC’s social media and promotion of the CAMT. Possibility of assisting with community-based participatory research project on the CAMT with survivors for the right candidate.

EcoSwell is a multiple award-winning for-impact non profit driving the development of marginalised communities in Peru sustainably. Through socio-economic, environmental and educational projects we help improve people's lives and restore degraded natural ecosystems. We have reached +23,000 people since 2013 and aim to impact 40,000 by the end of 2022.

Intern Position Description: 

NGO/Social Enterprise Management: As an NGO/Social Enterprise Management volunteer intern you'll get exposure to a variety of tasks aimed at ensuring that the organization keeps growing in time. You'll get involved in tasks which the organization needs support with at that moment in time. You may be asked to contribute to the strategy of the organization, to contribute to projects from our various sustainability fronts (renewables, ecosystem restoration, research, marketing) and other related fronts vital to the welfare of our organization.

Research: As a Research volunteer intern work on instrument design and lay the foundations for baseline and monitoring efforts of EcoSwell projects. You will learn how to obtain indicators from community based efforts that contribute to the macro objectives of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Research interns can also work on specific research on topics such as public health (COVID-19 and tropical disease related) or the economics of sustainable tourism. You will learn about the complex dynamics between the non-profit, public and private sectors in the context in which we operate.

We take volunteer interns from all disciplines. We do require that they have an interest in sustainability. Writing well and strong communications skills are a plus.

Qualifications for NGO/Social Enterprise Management Intern:

Degrees from all disciplines apply. An interest in sustainability, an open mind and most importantly, a willingness to learn with an open mind are essential. A can-do and proactive attitude are a must.

Qualifications for Research Intern:

Candidates will possess an analytical mind, be curious and committed. Good writing and communication skills and basic statistics are required. Excel, SPSS could prove useful but is not necessary for the internship. Spanish language would be useful to conduct qualitative interviews, but it is not compulsory.

Founded in 2016 by students and survivors, The Every Voice Coalition is a student, recent alum and survivor-led non-profit working to end campus sexual violence by passing student-written legislation on the state-level to prevent sexual violence on campuses and ensure support for student survivors. To date, Every Voice has:

- Passed 5 student and survivor-written bills into law (MA, NH, CT, NV & IL) which impact over 1.6 million students

- Trained 35 fellows with the tools to be leaders in grassroots, legislative advocacy through their signature advanced civic engagement fellowships

- Expanded their movement into a total of 12 states and engaged over 16,000 students in their advocacy efforts

Not only is Every Voice creating monumental legislative change to end campus sexual violence but they are ensuring that a generation of young people is equipped and empowered to be leaders in the legislative process to make change and fight for their rights.

Intern Position Description: 

Communications Intern: For this internship, we are looking for young people who are interested in learning how to develop and execute non-profit communications (including creating social media campaigns, cultivating earned media, writing press releases and external reports, etc.). This internship would also include working directly with EVC staff to develop strategy for communications-- we aim to teach young folks the nitty-gritty, real-world skills to be able to thrive as young communications leaders.

Democracy in the United States is under systematic attack – big money raised in secret diminishes the voice of the people in our elections, voting rights are being undermined and the security of our elections is threatened. Join the Democracy Is For People team in mobilizing the power of the people to combat threats and defend our democracy. Public Citizen has played a lead role in the effort to overturn Citizens United and is working on solutions to the problem of big money in politics locally too. In addition to rooting out big money from our political system, we’re working to enact sweeping democracy reform to ensure every person has a voice in our Democracy.

Intern Position Description: 

Working with activists around the country, including locally and in key states, to get them involved in strategic campaigns;

South Bay Coalition to End Trafficking

 

Description:

The South Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking is the local collaborative effort that responds to human trafficking in the South Bay. Utilizing a victim-centered approach, the South Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking’s mission is to ensure the protection of victims, the prosecution of offenders, and the prevention of human trafficking and exploitation through effective coordinated partnership. A staff of two means everything the Coalition does is in partnership.

Intern Position Description: 

(a) We are looking for one person to work as a Coalition Intern

(b) This person would assist with research based projects. Primarily the focus will be on the neutral toolkit focused on decriminalization. This includes doing some research on the impact of different forms of regulating commercial sex on trafficking.

(b) Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes to maintain and grow a national non-profit? National Development Fellows work directly with the EVC National team to learn and hone critical non-profit management and development skills in grant writing, donor prospecting and relations, grassroots fundraising, and more. Initiate Justice

 

Description:

Initiate Justice works to end incarceration in CA by activating the political power of the people most impacted by it. Initiate Justice organizes and educates people inside and outside of CA prisons to be engaged in criminal justice policy change. Initiate Justice has passed 10 pieces of legislation in the past 6 years and has trained over 500 impacted people inside and outside of prisons on legislative advocacy and civic engagement. Initiate Justice staff and leadership consists entirely of people impacted by incarceration. Initiate Justice defines directly impacted as people who are currently incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, and loved ones of people currency and formerly incarcerated.

Intern Position Description: 

Policy Intern: The Policy Intern will support our Policy Team with tracking and assessing criminal justice policy, developing materials and tools to support criminal justice policy campaigns that Initiate Justice is co-sponsoring, and other activities to aid Initiate Justice staff and community members in advocating for criminal justice policy change. Possible projects include monitoring legislation and regulations that could impact our community, assisting with drafting position letters, and supporting legal analysis and the process of drafting legislation.

Advocacy Intern: The Advocacy Intern will support Initiate Justice’s Statewide Advocacy Manager with keeping impacted community members informed and educated about criminal justice policies that impact them, the statewide legislative process, and being effective advocates for statewide policy change and implementation. Possible projects include drafting educational materials around particular pieces of criminal justice legislation, about various steps of the legislative process, and detailing how to effectively advocate for policy change to statewide elected officials. The Advocacy Intern may also assist with trainings and presentations to inform community members about legislative advocacy, outreach efforts to amplify the importance of legislative advocacy, and supporting community members with advocacy calls-to-action and community organizing efforts to change criminal justice policy in CA. The Advocacy Intern may also assist Initiate Justice staff with identifying and reducing barriers that may prohibit impacted people from engaging in legislative advocacy and organizing.

Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office

 

Description:

The Office of the Public Defender endeavors to provide vigorous, high quality representation to our indigent clients in the criminal and civil courts of Santa Clara County. This robust advocacy is extended to all of our clients without regard to the nature or notoriety of their case or charge. While members of the private bar may decline to undertake representation in a particular instance, it is the duty of the Public Defender to assume the defense of all individuals who qualify financially for our mandated services, i.e., those who cannot afford to hire their own attorney.

Intern Position Description: 

Felony Team Intern: Interns in this program will attend court, meet with clients, watch and log video from police-worn body cameras, create timelines and maps of cases, read and analyze court transcripts, prepare clients' social histories, and analyze various pieces of evidence in light of the legal standard. They will watch what happens in court, where their work might be the centerpiece of a key cross examination or the heart of a sentencing hearing. Public defender interns confront a variety of social justice issues, including racial disparities in policing and prosecution, class and income inequality, mass incarceration, and more.

Standing Together Against Real Slavery

 

Description:

STARS is a spiritually based organization that is dedicated to the restoration of hope, the identification of purpose, and the re-creation of self-worth in today's misdirected and neglected youth. Standing Together Against Real Slavery is a survivor-based organization dedicated to supporting and empowering young women who have experienced or are at high risk for commercial sexual exploitation (sex trafficking). They offer a unique crisis prevention/intervention program with personalized case management and mentorship.

Intern Position Description:

Description:

The mission of Junior State of America (JSA) is to educate and prepare high school students to be active participants and effective, ethical leaders in our democratic society. The student-run, student-led Junior State of America empowers a diverse community of passionate young leaders to learn together, think critically, advocate opinions thoughtfully, respect opposing views and promote the common good.

Intern Position Description: 

These interns would help to plan and implement our Summer programming, as well as programming with our Summer partner, the ACLU. The work required would be logistical planning and support of our in-person programs in Washington, D.C., and potentially for a second program in the Southern United States, also with the ACLU. Primary dates of work would be June 15 - August 10. Interns would need to be willing to travel, which JSA would pay for.

What is the organization looking for? What makes the ideal candidate for this position?

We need interns who are organized, detail oriented, preferably with experience in peer mentorship and/or management. The work will be asking the interns to do is challenging, in the sense of them organizing events and activities. Flexibility, organization and reading for comprehension are super important. Problem solving is key.

Time commitment: This time will vary, based on whether it is a "work from home" week, or an "in-person" week. Work-from-home weeks should be pretty short, maybe 5-10 hours per week. In-person weeks might be a full 8 hours per day for 2-3 days.

Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office

 

Description:

The Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office is the largest public defender’s office in the nation. They defend indigent children and adults accused of crime. The office is entirely funded by Los Angeles County. They do not accept payment for their services. Their Volunteer Internship Program is year- round and is either full or part time, depending on the availability of each intern. Volunteers who intern during the summer dedicate anywhere from 16 to 40 hours per week, for at least a nine-week period.

Intern Position Description: 

While they intern, volunteers may perform light administrative duties such as trial and hearing document preparation, document drafting and production all at the direction of the supervising Attorney or the coordinator. Interns may also assist with database and log entry, email and letter correspondence and other clerical work. Volunteer interns are prohibited from the practice of law including but not limited to: negotiating for and on behalf of the Client in any trial, hearing or proceeding and signing any document requiring the signature of an attorney. During the internship period, volunteers are given the opportunity to observe the daily operations of the public defenders’ office at any given branch/location in the county. They may attend weekly training and lectures on the law, as well as observe attorneys in hearing and jury/court trials. They are also able to attend weekly (or bi-weekly) general attorney office meetings. This experience is all designed to give them a glimpse into our work.

All majors welcome to apply, but law, public policy, and government focus is preferred

Skills: strong communication skills, ability to write and speak well in languages other than English (preferred but not required), proficient in Microsoft teams, excel, and powerpoint, and well versed in social media.
